A small basement wine cellar can turn your musty basement into a cozy home for your bottles of wine. In this cellar, we worked with a stunning brick wall that we transformed to serve as a special feature of the basement wine cellar. We installed dark-finished wood wine racks that complement the dark wooden beams on the ceiling. Our Custom Wine Cellars Denver team will take you on a tour of how we made this cozy basement wine cellar possible. If you want a small wine cellar in your basement and you’re looking for someone to custom design and build it, we will be happy to create a 3D drawing for you!

Here’s the finished brick wall for our stylish basement wine cellar.

Designing a Small Basement Wine Cellar

Before starting the project, our professional builders assessed the space to see what we were working with. In planning for the design, it was important to consider all elements of the space to develop a coherent design that fits the home.

As we worked with the client’s basement, we saw a lot of potential for the basement’s brick wall. Having a gorgeous stone wall on a basement wine cellar in Denver is not a common feature. So with a little pampering, we restored the walls to their beauty and used them as the foundation for our cellar design.

To go well with the dark hues on the brick wall, we decided to go for dark wooden finishes for the basement wine cellar. The ceiling had supportive cement beams, but its gray and ashy tones needed to fit the look of the cellar we were aiming for. Instead of sticking with their industrial cement finish, we covered them with dark wood. This was a decision supported by the client. We didn’t have to break down the basement from scratch; rather, we just covered up its ceiling beams to make it fit with the overall style of the space.

These design choices show how important it is to have professionals on your basement wine cellar projects. Hiring the right professionals could seem like a pricey investment at first, but it benefits you in the long run. Our Custom Wine Cellars Denver team is

The original beams of this basement looked great for a wine cellar. So, we just enhanced them.

a professional at creating traditional, modern, or contemporary wine cellars. Every suggestion we make to our clients ensures that the cellar will stand the test of time and securely store your bottles of wine. We can work with any budget, and with every decision, you are assured that we have considered every alternative and chosen what’s best.

From making the ceiling beams fit with the timeless aesthetic we are going for, we look into the windows. The windows in the basement are small square glasses with white framings that do not fit the style we envisioned for the space. So we extended the wood from the ceiling beams to the windows. From the inside of the basement, we framed the windows with a dark wood like the beams.

For the walls, we decided to balance the darkness of the wood finishes with a light wash of paint. We used a muted yellow that blends well with the house. With white paint on the ceiling, the lighting was amplified to make the space brighter while maintaining the cozy ambiance of the basement wine cellar. With the coherence between the ceiling, walls, and windows, we can achieve a basement wine cellar design that feels cozy and classy.

Basement Wine Cellar Racks to Store Hundreds of Wines

Organizing hundreds of wines could feel overwhelming, but it is a smooth sailing process with the right wooden wine racking solutions. In this small basement wine cellar, we asked our clients a few questions before we designed the wine racks:

  • How many bottles do you currently have in your collection?
  • What is the maximum number of bottles you see your collection growing to?
  • What do you want to feel when you are in the basement wine cellar?

This is what the finished racking looks like when the lights are fully turned on. This basement wine cellar has come along way from its original condition.

During planning the basement wine cellar racks, the clients had around a hundred wines. This number of bottles means we can focus on filling a specific rack area and build from there. For their maximum number of bottles, they saw their collection growing from around 700 to 900 bottles. So we made a wooden wine racking design that would expand the space. As for the feel of the basement wine cellar, the owners want to keep it warm and traditional.

Our team came up with a custom wine rack design that could store and showcase the bottles in multiple ways. For the main spectacle of the wine cellar, we constructed a huge arch in the middle of the racks. It was a perfect way to break up the space. Then we constructed vertical racks that maximize the storage, slanted wine racks that show off the bottle labels, and diagonal wine racks to complete that classic wine cellar atmosphere. Then to tie it in with the ceiling beams and window frames, we used a dark finish wood for these wine storage racks.

Custom Basement Wine Cellar Lighting to Brighten Up the Underground Space

To make the basement cellar feel cozy, we added a custom wine cellar lighting system. This lighting illuminated the slanted racks and served as a spotlight to these special bottles. So when the owners want a chill bottle of wine in the nighttime, they can enjoy it with the cozy ambiance from the custom lights.
