Wine cellar designs, especially those found in private homes, commonly embrace an atmosphere that imbibes relaxation and calmness. Curated to invite homeowners and their guests to have a glass of wine and rest after the strife in the outside world, home wine displays are often finished with neutral palettes.
Compared to traditional and most contemporary wine cellars, modern wine rooms have more flexibility when it comes to palettes since they are envisioning to have that futuristic vibe.
This wine room, built by our partners from CWC.com, is the complete package for what you may think a modern wine storage room should be. Integrated with glossy wine room shelves, glass panels, and innovative RGB lighting that can change colors, it’s a must-see wine cellars for those looking for a modern design inspos!
Planning Your Modern Wine Room Design Around Your Home’s Existing Interiors
During the initial stages of design, we always consider how the home looks on the inside. With a few exceptions, for when, for example, the client wants to have a totally different theme for her wine cellar, we tailor the design of these wine rooms to match the adjacent space.
Inside this beautiful home, a large spare room sits with an unused wall; quite practical for builders to install a new wine closet.
The room featured black tiling work and laminated brown-red walls. Given the available space, the clients were also able to add two leather sofas directly outside their modern wine room.
In Modern Wine Cellars, Glass Doors Are Staple
Modern wine rooms are characterized by straight, clean lines, and minimalist surfaces, and the very thing that people notice are the doors since they subtly give that initial impression. Compared to fully traditional wooden wine cellar doors, glass doors offer a much cleaner look.
Between single and dual-paned glass, dual-paned tempered glass was used to enclose this modern wine cellar. Vailred single-paned glass can usually serve well in areas where temperatures are cool and stable throughout the year. According to Senior Design Consultant, Steve Pantalemon, “With the Las Vegas weather, you have to manage temperatures inside and outside the wine cellar if you’re going to use single glass panels”.
Since this home is located in Las Vegas, where temperatures may fluctuate to the extremes, dual-paned glass was the better option.
The builders of this wine cellar incorporated dual-paned glass into double-swinging doors that open outward. The doors are also framed with matte-black stainless steel. Between the swinging doors, the team also installed magnets so the doors easily lock into place when closed and will not easily open unless applied with force.
The magnets are quite practical and highly recommended in glass wine cellar doors since you won’t have to worry about leaving the door slightly open during times when you’re not as attentive (or you’re in a rush).
Insulation and Modern Cooling: The Keys to A Long-Lasting Wine Preservation Room
Fresh wines have one secret. They are well preserved in wine closets or wine cellars maintained at the optimal temperature and humidity for wine. Wine may go stale or deteriorate when exposed to unsuitable conditions. If kept in a well-refrigerated place, they can last for generations.
There are cooling systems designed and built specially for wine cellars. Moreover, the type of unit will vary according to a number of factors, including location of your wine cellar, available wall/attic space, size of wine cellar, and more.
For this custom modern wine room, the HS 8600 from US Cellar Systems was the most suitable. It’s a fully ducted, high static wine room cooling system that operates quietly. While all cooling units have “noisy” components to them, these components are installed away from the cellar for wine cellar cooling systems.
What’s also great about the HS8600 is it can perform well and maintain static pressure even in high-temperature seasons in Cherry Hills, Washington Park, Country Club, Belcaro, Wellshire, Southpark Hill, Congress Park, Platt Park, and more.
The copper tubing that goes with the HS8600 ran through the walls and into the condensing unit behind the wine cellar. After running the line sets, 3-4 inches of closed-cell spray foam insulation was added to the wall, followed by plywood and greenboards.
The team went with a near-brick red color to paint the cellar’s walls which also complements the walls outside the room.
Glossy Wine Racks Are on Trend!
Metal wine racks are commonly the go-to racking solutions for wine storage rooms. However, for this contemporary wine room, the team set aside the metal racks and went for fully customized wood laminates polished with a white, glossy coating.
This wine rack has 20 drawers, 4 open bins, and 12 triangular bins at the bottom. Every pull-out drawer was built with 6 metal racks inside to hold 750-ml wine bottles label-forward. The open triangular bins allow the storage of bottles in a cork-forward manner.
Directly above the drawer section is a massive counter space that can be used for different purposes, including wine decanting and storing decanters, wine tools, and other bottles.
The topmost section was built with dual-deep matte-black metal rods to carry standard-sized and magnum-sized bottles.
To add to this wine display’s versatility, we left some empty space at the center of the rack where the owners can display some artwork or install a large glass mirror.
In total, the initial wine rack can carry around 920 wine bottles, with still enough space to expand!
What’s Unique About This Modern Wine Cellar?
Any designer would say that the right lighting can significantly transform the look and feel of any space. Normally, in wine cellars, warm and white LED lights are used in various forms (puck lights, track lights, strip lights, etc.) to create that cozy scene.
With this client, RGB lighting plan felt like a great plan. RGB lights are manufactured with different colors and can be controlled to display a certain color at a time. They’re very innovative solutions for modern wine spaces built for entertainment purposes.
With so many colors to choose from, this wine room can entirely transform through its lights!
