Modern wine cellars feature a design that emphasizes functionality and minimalism. With only a few to no touches of rich patterns and complex woodwork, modern designs can be perceived as exclusive.
For this beautiful home along Signal Road, our partners at CWC.com wanted to put a little twist on the modern wine cellar design. The team established a balance between wood, metal, and glass elements to radiate a warmer, more welcoming ambiance which can also be felt throughout the house.

The Attraction in Modern Wine Cellars
Contemporary designs are known for their gentle, home-y aura, one that could instantly make someone feel at ease and relaxed. It’s the style one would find inviting especially when you want to relax and grab a glass of wine after a hard day’s work.
This residential wine cellar was built in the middle of the house’s formal dining area and the family room – an ideal location to get some drinks on every ocassion. The family had a spare room under the stairs, then used as a toilet, so the ceiling and layout of the room was relatively irregular.
Had the team gone for a fully traditional design, it would’ve potentially made the space feel smaller. But with the use of modern design, the cleaner lines, surfaces, and subtle patterns, preserved the size of the room with enough space for anyone to enter and tour the space.
Metal-Framed Glass Wine Cellar Door
Ushering guests into this one-of-a-kind wine cellar is a single lone glass door with a sleek black frame and jamb. The glass is dual-paned which means that it comes with two glass panels cramming a “spacer”, usually argon gas, to increase its insulation proficiency.
The door comes with a metal handle, 24 inches in length, which people can easily grab and pull.
To lock the glass door, a traditional lock and key system was installed, and a separate magnetic pair to ensure the door is secured when it’s closed.

A Chic, Sustainable Way to Flooring
If you were at the actual home, believe us when we say you’ll be mesmerized. Every corner was planned to the detail including the floors and ceiling!
The home’s interior already had wooden floors and the team wanted to reflect the same kind of cozy feel to the cellar. To differentiate the room, though, they used oak barrels instead of hardwood or vinyl.
Repurposing oak wine barrels involves disassembling them, flattening the wood, and resurfacing them to bring out the rich color. In wine barrels, you can repurpose the countertop, staves, and cooperage. For this wine cellar’s floor, the team used the staves part of the barrel. You can even see some of the original markings, contributing to a very authentic design!
Dynamic Wine Racking Style for Contemporary Wine Rooms
This wine room under-the-stairs features five walls where the team built wine racks in. A combination of wooden and metal displays presents the bottles in a stylish way, all custom-made to fit this wine cellar.
Three out of five walls had wooden wine racks, while two out of the five walls had metal wine racks. The fifth wall to the right of the glass door was built with a floating countertop made from the same kind of wood as the rest of the wine racks – white ripped oak stained with a rustic color.
Right across the glass wine cellar door is the metal wine racks wall that showcases the wine bottles in a horizontal position. The racks are by VintageView and they were set a few inches from the wall to make way for the LED ribbon lights installed behind the posts.
On the surface directly below the staircase (yes, the ceiling part), the team did some tiling work and installed eight individual metal bottle holders. Now that’s a fashionable, functional way to utilize the space!
Custom Lighting Design for that Artful Glow
All the wine racks were installed with LED lighting. On the wooden shelves, about ½ inch was carved near the edges to make way for channel lights. On the metal racks, light strips were installed behind the posts to give that creative glow from behind.
Another special feature of the wooden wine racks is the presence of white acrylic LED panels. The base panels of the middle shelves were custom-built with these LED panels instead of wood planks, so they provide a sophisticated glow to the bottles from the bottom.
The Best Wine Cooling Solution for This Space
All properly built wine cellars have a dedicated wine cooling system that maintains their temperature and humidity. For this wine cellar, the team decided a ductless split-system was best since it didn’t have that much wall space to use a self-contained system or employ ducting works.
US Cellars Systems’s RM4600 was the choice, and it operates at 4600 BTUs. Its a powerful and reliable ductless split-system where the evaporator and condenser is connected through a coil.
We placed the evaporator near the floor of the wine cellar (hidden behind a wooden louvered grille), ran the coils through the walls, and up to the attic where the condensing unit was placed.
Surely, all the wines here are served fresh 24/7 because of this cooling system!
